DDOSFB#66 - Wynton Marsalis

"Flight of the Bumblebee" is an Orchestral Sweet originally written by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera 'The Tale of Tsar Saltan' (circa 1900).
As the name suggests, the piece, with its frantic pace, brings to mind a flying bumblebee.

A jazz adaptation to the manic piece was made by Wynton Marsalis, a renown modern American trumpeter.

DDOSFB#65 - Groove Armada

The music genre/style big beat.

"Big beat tends to feature distorted, compressed breakbeats at moderate tempos (usually between 90 to 140 beats per minute), acid house style synthesizer lines and heavy loops from jazz, rock or 60s pop."

While the style's name might not ring a bell with most people, some artists within the style do. One of these artists is London's Groove Armada. (Additionally, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy.)

Their music has been featured in several media such as movies, advertising campaigns and computer games.

This song is somewhat more mellow than most of the work by the artists named.

Wait for the piano kicking in taking the track to heaven.

Turn it up and enjoy.

"You step out of a time traveling device, realizing that due to a machine-failure you have traveled both 50 years backwards, and 50 years forward at the same time," Waldeck explains.

DDOSFB#62 - The Killers

"Are we human of are we dancer?"

That is the question.

This grammatically dubious question posed by the Killers frontman Brandon Flowers over "Human"'s atypical dance beat sparked a surge of debate over the internet after the late 2008 release of the song as the band's first single to their new album "Day & Age".

Around the date of its release, the Killers performed "Human" at the 2008 EMAs, putting on a pretty cool show.

DDOSFB#61 - Manzanita

This song emanates the real latin-caribbean feel!

Manzanita means little apple (manzana = apple) Most of it is based on a song called Quimbara that has been performed by several different artists, notably famous Celia Cruz.

DDOSFB#60 - José González

The trademark sound of Swedish/Argentinean singer-songwriter José González can be described as soft melodic vocals with a solo Spanish guitar.

For his first single, the indie folk singer released an acoustic cover of 'Heartbeats', originally by Swedish synth-pop sibling-duo The Knife.

Quite the contrast.

DDOSFB#59 - Jacques Loussier

From the book The Well Tempered Clavier, a series of piano pieces, this is Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude in C Major.

With a twist that is.

Jacques Loussier, a gifted composer, became famous for his jazz interpretations of many of Bach's pieces. After the break up of his Play Bach Trio he worked together with the likes of Pink Floyd, Elton John and Sting. Three hundred years after Bach's birth the trio reunited with two additional artists.

Halfway through, this track swings around to become a funky jazz tune to speed up and add significant speed and spice in the last minute.

DDOSFB#58 - Flo Rida

On the first single of his new album, Flo Rida 'borrows' the chorus of Dead Or Alive's 1984 hit-song "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)".
The uncredited female vocals are provided by Kesha, who can easily be confused with Katy Perry.

DDOSFB#56 - Pavarotti

In late 1935, a baker and a cigar factory worker had a child in the outskirts of Modena, Italy. As the boy grew up, he became passionate about football and developed his dream of becoming a professional goalkeeper. As he faced the dilemma of a career choice, his mother persuaded him into become an elementary school teacher. After several years, however, at the age of 19, he decided to switch career paths once again, starting a study in music.
It was not until at this moment that he realized his voice had the perfect pitch. From that point onwards, the young singer started his rise to fame. Throughout his life, he toured the world, singing in innumerable renowned pieces, starring in TV shows and selling over a hundred million records. Eventually, he became one of the legendary 'Three Tenors' and the most famous and popular operatic tenor of all time.

DDOSFB#55 - David Gray

English singer-songwriter David Gray re-released his single "This Years Love". In the newer version, an emphasis was placed on the strings and a gentle drum was added, giving it a bit more of a romantic touch.

Enjoy your Valentine's.

For all those sitting at home alone, don't feel bad. This is for you.

DDOSFB#53 - De Phazz

We're keeping it funky.

De Phazz is an ensemble led by a German producer who mixes up his crew for every album. This creates unique tracks and albums. Still, the sound is very distinct throughout his work.

Note the metropolitan vibe of the song, as well as some 60s associations.

DDOSFB#51 - Alison Krauss & Robert Plant

At Sunday's 51st Grammy Awards, the unexpected collaboration between Robert Plant (former lead vocalist of Led Zeppelin) and Alison Krauss (26 Grammy-award winning Bluegrass-soprano) turned out the big winner.

The two were both awarded 'Record of the Year' with their duet "Please Read the Letter" as well as 'Album of the Year'.

'Record of the Year' or boring folk-rock that should have won the Granny Awards instead?

You be the judge:

DDOSFB#50 - Betty Hutton

Starting her singing activities in a speakeasy (underground bar in the USA during the non-alcohol period), getting rejected by Broadway to eventually get accepted by Broadway shows, Betty Hutton made a career for herself.

The original song of this cover is from the 1939 film The Roaring Twenties.

Classic voice, classic style.

DDOSFB#49 - John Mayer

John Mayer consistently delivers quality music. His most well known song 'Your Body is a Wonderland' got him a grammy award and several of his albums went multi-platinum.

He has released three studio albums as a solo artist. Additionally, he has released live DVDs/albums as well as engaged in collaborative projects such as the John Mayer Trio.

His earlier work had more of a pop sound but increasingly his style shows a blues vibe, especially his bluesy guitar stretches put his signature on his songs.

Next to music John Mayer busies himself with design (guitars), writing (Esquire Magazine) and stand-up comedy (VH1).

DDOSFB#47 - Brett Dennen

Folk singer Brett Dennen, with his distinct feminine style of singing, when heard, is often confused as being a female singer.

His introspective lyrics and organic-style of singing is strongly influenced by that of Tracy Chapman, who, ironically is often mistaken for a white male singer...

DDOSFB#46 - Jazzhole

The music genre Acid Jazz, combines elements of Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop, and to a lesser extent shows influences of soul music, house and disco.

A main feature of the genre is the usage of looping (repeating a certain part of a song or a sound sample), as opposed to classical jazz where fifteen minute songs can contain several solo's without repeating much.

In Acid Jazz, the jazz sound combined with a beat and a warm jazzy bass works really well, granting Jazz access to a more electronic range of music.

Jazzhole is a band from New York regarded as one of the key members in the Acid Jazz movement.

DDOSFB#45 - Quantic & Nickodemus

Quantic is the stage name of the Colombian-based producer Will Holland (which agreeably sounds a bit less exotic).
Nickodemus is a New York DJ with a wide-ranging style of music.

This is all not very exciting, unlike their collaborative song "Mi Swing Es Tropical".
Latin flavor.

DDOSFB#44 - She's Spanish, I'm American

Josh Rouse is an American singer/songwriter. His music is mostly laid back rock/pop, it listens easy, but still, his lyrics can go quite deep.

He opened for John Mayer during one of his tours. Their style is comparable to some extent. Complementary might be the better word.

In 2006 he moved to Spain. He recorded a record together with his girlfriend. The duo called She's Spanish, I'm American released the record (EP) on his personal label Bedroom Classics.

Their style is said to be 'folk/roots pop'. It's just chilled out.
